Designing the website for the Netherlands' national crisis helpline — working within existing brand guidelines and a component library to create something that feels safe, clear, and human.

The challenge
113 Zelfmoordpreventie is the national crisis helpline for suicide prevention in the Netherlands. Their platform serves people in acute vulnerability — every design decision carries real weight. The challenge wasn't to reinvent their brand but to work within it: an existing set of brand guidelines and a component library that needed to be translated into a digital experience that felt safe to navigate.
That constraint shaped the entire approach. This wasn't a blank canvas — it was a design problem about applying an identity thoughtfully, making deliberate choices about hierarchy, tone, and interaction within a system that already existed.

The approach
I worked on the visual design and UX of the website, focusing on how to translate the foundation's brand language into layouts that prioritise immediate clarity. The crisis pathways — getting someone to help as quickly as possible — drove the information architecture. Every page was structured around a single principle: reduce friction, reduce overwhelm.
The design language balances warmth with restraint. Enough visual identity to feel trustworthy, enough whitespace and hierarchy to not overwhelm. The existing component library was extended rather than replaced — adapting what was there to work harder in the digital context while staying consistent with the foundation's broader brand presence.

Outcome
Full website design — desktop and mobile. Information architecture and user flows for crisis pathways. Brand application to digital — working within existing guidelines. Extended component library for web-specific patterns. WCAG-compliant design decisions throughout.
